I never really liked the Audi A2, but now that I’m a bit more mature (haha how am I kidding), the A2 doesn’t seem half bad.

Quick confession, I like the Aztec as well. I have weird taste in cars.

I started to like them too a while ago, though that is a combination of the looks and the, at the time, revolutionary technology used in it.

Funnily enough the 3L diesel version of both the A2 and the Lupo are still quite expensive over here, due to the great fuel economy they get.

It’s a car that was about 15 years ahead of its time, before fuel economy and compact premium became cool..

I suspect that the A2 and special versions of the Lupo like the GTI will be future classics. The 3l versions still fascinate me after 15 years. Too bad that the 1.2 tdi is apparently problematic and paired to an automatic.

Compact premium was more or less discovered by the German “big three” with the 3er Compact, A3 and the A Class of which only the Audi kept its basic shape. I just love the A2's concept of weight saving paired to relatively small engines and the rather quirky design.

I started to like these as well! Very bold and successful design, IMO. It still looks futuristic, all those years later!

Audi designs of the late 90s and early 00s aged so much better than BMWs and Benzes of the same vintage.

I agree regarding Mercedes, but not really BMW though:

There’s one right near me in Virginia rocking diplomat plates. Diplomats are exempt from import laws and can bring pretty much any car into the states. I’ve seen a Lancia Thesis, a BMW E36 wagon, a Smart roadster, and other crazy stuff.

I wish American diplomats in Europe would drive interesting cars but no, of course they drive the typical boring Impalas and Tahoes.
